Description

This is a clinical trial evaluating the impact of omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, on inflammatory factors that contribute to heart disease. There were 40 study participants randomised to supplementation with various types of fish oil or a placebo for 30 days. The primary outcome is the impact of fish oil on the expression of inflammatory mediators produced by stimulated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (i.e. VCAM-1, ICAM-1, MCP-1) and mouse 3T3L1 adipocytes (i.e. IL-1beta, IL6, IL18, TNF-alpha, adiponectin, leptin and resistin). Assessed at Day 1 and Day 30 by adding human serum before and after supplementation to cells in culture.
