N1 - Funding Information: There is no other time in life when the provision of adequate and balanced nutrition is of greater importance than during infancy and childhood. During this dynamic phase of life, characterized by rapid growth, development, and developmental plasticity, sufficient amounts and an appropriate composition of supplied substrates are of key importance for growth, functional outcomes, such as cognition and immune response, and the metabolic programming of long-term health and wellbeing. A number of excellent textbooks on pediatric nutrition are available that provide detailed accounts on the scientific and physiologic basis of nutrition and its application in clinical practice. However, busy physicians and other healthcare professionals often find it difficult to devote sufficient time to study elaborate and extensive books on just one aspect of their practice. Therefore, we compiled this condensed volume with the aim of providing concise information to readers who seek quick guidance on the practice of nutrition of infants, children, and adolescents. The first two editions were a great success, with a very large number of copies disseminated in printed form and as e-books in English, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian editions. We received many positive comments from readers as well as suggestions for further improvements. We considered these in preparing this thoroughly revised and updated third edition, with a truly international perspective to address challenges in both affluent and challenged populations around the world, supported by the enthusiastic input from a global editorial board. We are most grateful to the authors from all parts of the globe, who are widely recognized experts in their fields, for dedicating time, effort, and their knowledge and experience to prepare their chapters. It has been a true pleasure to work closely with the dedicated team at Karger publishers who did a fantastic and truly professional job in producing a book of outstanding quality. Finally, we thank the Nestlé Nutrition Institute for providing financial support to the publisher to facilitate wide dissemination of this book. We are particularly grateful to the Nestlé Nutrition Institute for fully supporting the complete independence of editors and authors in their choices of content and direction of the book and its chapters.
