N1 - Funding Information: Members' Trust One of Robyn's major tasks was the establishment of the members' trust. Funds for the trust are received from the proceeds of the Annual Scientific Meetings on lntensive Care co-hosted by CACCN and the Australian and New Zealand lntensive Care Society (ANZICS). Following the 1991 meeting in Adelaide a decision needed to be made as to how these and subsequent funds could be appropriately distributed to the members. Funding Information: with respectable research method ology? These were the questions confronted by the trio. A national standards steering committee was established with representation from each state. We advertised for expressions of interest to assist us in our endeavours and Robyn was able to enlist the support of Di Lawson from the South Australian Nurses Board. With Di, the now famous National Steering Committee (renowned for its hard work and fertility) the impossible seems to have been achieved by an incredible group of hard working critical care nurses. On the eve of the release of the first draft of the standards Robyn says, as she said in her recruitment drive for data collectors: "If you did not participate in this project you have missed out on being involved in one of the most significant events in critical care nursing in Australia. We have undertaken a national multi-centre research project to analyse the role and function of specialist critical care nurses. From direct observation of nurse specialists we have been able to describe for the first time the Australian Critical Care Nurse Specialist. The work has been an extension and validation of the original ANCl competencies. We have however, been able to observe larger numbers than the original work with significantly less funds, thanks to the hard work of the unpaid committee and data collectors." Although unable to be fully committed to the very end of the project, because of her current work commitments, Robyn believes that it has been one of the highlights of her critical care nursing career.
