Translating colonic sensory afferent peripheral mechanosensitivity into the spinal cord dorsal horn

Abstract

Sensory afferent signalling from the colon and rectum is relayed into the spinal cord. The spinal cord contains distinct neurocircuits that control in what manner incoming sensory input is conveyed into the brain. The spinal cord is therefore a key relay point shaping how colonic nociceptive stimuli are ultimately perceived. This minireview summarises what is currently known of the spinal cord circuits that receive sensory input from the colon and how they shape colonic nociceptive relay into the brain.
