Abstract
The first guideline for the basic fertility work-up in the Netherlands was formulated in March 1995. Since then, new knowledge about several tests of the basic fertility work-up has been obtained. The accuracy of tests such as the Chlamydia antibody titre and the post-coital test has been analyzed in systematic reviews. The basic fertility work-up contains data on medical history and some additional tests, that allow calculation of a prognosis. In the medical history, female age, the duration of the subfertility and subfertility being primary or secondary are of critical importance. The basic fertility work-up also contains tests for cycle monitoring, a semen analysis, a post-coital test, a basal FSH and at least one test for tubal function. These data allow calculation of a prognosis of treatment independent pregnancy within 12 months.
